The Mumbai Carnage: What Next?

The media reports of scores of unconstitutional arrests underscore panic in Islamabad as Delhi makes diplomatic and geo-strategic gains for itself and its western allies in the aftermath of staged Mumbai carnage. If humiliating economic deal with IMF deal and fawning silence of friends of Pakistan wasn’t enough, the anti-Pakistan reaction of international community against Pakistan has left no doubt in the mind of ordinary Pakistanis that reports about country’s alleged balkanization, de-nuclearization of the only Muslim nuclear State and destruction of national economy are more than figments of imagination.

UN Resolution against Pakistan without defining terrorism or allowing Islamabad to present its version is not only biased but also contradictory to norms of justice. Unfortunately, the statement of Pakistan’s permanent representative to UN recorded after the passage of resolution claiming lack of consultation also shows that our representative was ‘sleeping’ while his counterpart achieved sinister objectives for Delhi. It is time to show him the door. Similarly, the unfolding events clearly show that Mumbai carnage was enacted to help west achieve geo-strategic gains in Asia and ME. From American public’s perspective, Mumbai drama was staged to corner (or facilitate) democrat president-elect Obama to ‘continue’ with neo-con policies in post Bush era. Obama ‘forced’ or otherwise to keep Defense Secretary (232 year old US history shows only 3 new president continued with incumbent president’s appointees on sensitive posts such a defense secretary) has inherited a bottomless web of deceits and lies that was woven to protect American economic and geo-strategic interests across the globe. The failure of Afghan occupiers since 2001 to raise national Afghan army and allied security infrastructure and statements of Gates and McCain about continuation of indefinite occupation of Afghanistan show that war against terrorism is an excuse maintain Afghan occupation. In case of Iraq also, despite 700,000 strong Iraqi security forces Americans are unwilling to abandon Iraq in 2011.
‘It is not a definite timeline’, White House. The reports of UK’s troop withdrawal from Iraq in March 2009 further show There is a universal consensus that unrest on both sides of Pak-Afghan border and in Iraq is the indigenous reaction against occupation forces.
The challenge for Obama therefore is to stay the course of ‘war’ reset for him by the Mumbai carnage or watch country sinks deeper into bankruptcy and soaring unemployment (1.2 million jobs lost so far, highest in last 70 years) which will further destroy American image. If Obama continues with wars it will be equivalent to undermining of the democratic will of American public. And for rest of the world it will be end of hope in international laws and conventions that laid the foundation of modern world and ended ‘might is right’ rule of dark-ages. A look at American Foreign policy decision-making process harrowingly reveals its ‘undemocratic structure’. A close look at the chapter Making Foreign Policy and Defense Policy in the national version of the book ‘Government by the People, show how intelligence agencies, handful of non-representative shadows take decisions in the name of American public. The interpretation of US constitution by the nationalist extremists leaves little choice for the US president but to rubberstamp the proposals or face impeachment for failure to protect national security. A detailed elaboration of American domestic politics and constitutional jigsaw puzzle should help Islamabad make informed choices instead of adopting reactionary policies.
It should tell the world that War on terror has cost it 40 billion US dollars and in return it has been forced to borrow 9 billion plus at 3.4 percent while advance world is giving loan to its institution under 2.5 percent. So much for the ally on war against terror. The Russia’s Communist Party mouth-piece daily Pravda on Friday suggested in an article that India is being provoked to start a ‘proxy-war’ against Pakistan as India is being considered as the ‘world’s policeman’ by United States and Israel. Pakistan by cobbling its differences with Moscow through Beijing or unilaterally give neo-cons, Delhi and Tel Aviv a run for their money.
Moscow with its energy expansion in Asia and ME will be eager to listen to Islamabad in wake of West’s NATO extension plans, Missile defense program in former USSR States and a strategic opportunity to avenge its Afghan defeat. But, in all probability that is what some in Islamabad are exactly paid not to do-avoid regional cooperation. Next, Islamabad should seek help of Beijing to expose conspiracy against Pakistan. A peaceful Pakistan with open border with Iran should improve China’s energy security. Similarly, Islamabad can extend its relations with Iran, Latin American States and Cuba to successfully stand against such evil designs. Reportedly, Venezuela froze banking ties with Washington thereby depriving the local corrupt bureaucrats from 40 billion US dollars stashed in American banks apparently skewed from local public development funds. Islamabad despite tracing flight of 1.21 billion US dollars in capital flight scam is unwilling to reclaim the money that in all probability is corruption money stolen from public funds and stock scams.
In post 2002 world, international financial regulations allow tracing and reclaiming of transferred sums by the governments down to single digits. The Muslim ummah that has abandoned Pakistan must not forget that West including UK, France and Germany have supported illegal US occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. They have failed to resolve Palestine and Kashmir. They supported Moscow against Muslims in Chechnya, failed to protect Muslims in Balkans and Philippines.
Now they are tacitly supporting illegal US attacks on Pakistan, which is the only Muslim nuclear state and a therefore a threat to Delhi in Asia and Tel Aviv in ME. Lastly, Islamabad should be urged to approach international platforms with help of Moscow and Beijing to end this carnage and force India, US and Israel to observe international laws as part of collective support. Lest we all face irreversible loss. If only it is realized.
